I choose Calligraphy. I mainly choose Calligraphy because I was not aware of what exactly it was. I have heard of it but never took the time to look into what it was. I already read over or covered Ceramics and Bronzes at some point during the semester so Calligraphy was the move. Here are three things I took away from reading about Calligraphy this week.

Calligraphy was mainly purchased by people who were higher up on the social ladder: Since calligraphy is such a popular item, it was usually purchased by people higher on the social ladder like nobles.

Fraudulent Manufacturing of Calligraphy was being performed: The educated class would learn how to copy the hand motions of famous writers so that they could copy their work. With all that hard work, why not just make your own at that point?

How to spot fraudulent Calligraphy: There were some comments in my last post about how to spot fake Calligraphy. Since I did not go into major detail, I took it upon myself to learn more about how to spot fraudulent Calligraphy. Even with these precise hand motions, people who bought this artwork knew which was fake and which was not. That seems like a simple answer but here is why. While these people faked others worked, the people who had bought the person’s artwork at an earlier date can tell the distinct differences between fake and real. The short story is they used the eye test based on what they bought before.

References

Clunas, Craig. Superfluous Things: Material Culture and Social Status in Early Modern China.
