I always assumed it would be men or a fifty fifty split. Not only were women spending most of their time making textiles, it has been said they spent “every available moment” working on textiles. While these textiles are beautiful, where did they get the material to make these?

Around 1300, the cotton revolution started in China. Technology was becoming so advanced that it became much easier as the years went on to use the cotton and make textiles. By the year 1840, cotton made up about 25% of the product China traded the most. Without the cotton revolution, who knows when textiles would have become as big as they are now. One positive that came from this is that women’s income in China began to rise and it was now considered the ‘Golden Age’ for women’s income. With today’s technology, I would expect the industry to grow even more!

References

Xue, Melanie Meng. “Cotton Textile Production in Medieval China Unravelled Patriarchy – Melanie Meng Xue: Aeon Ideas.” Aeon.
