Clothing is something we all need our life. After reading about how some of the textiles were made in China, I have really expanded my knowledge on Textiles in China. Before reading about textiles, I had some assumptions bout the process how textiles were made. After reading, a lot of my assumptions were incorrect. So, here as three things I learned about Textiles I China.
The first thing I learned is that most of textile industry was ran by women. As I mentioned in my initial post, I assumed that it would be a fifty fifty split of work or primarily men. Turns out women do most of the work in the textile industry. In fact, they tend to bring in the most money in the household!
The second thing I learned was that textiles would be used as an item to trade with. Each textile has a value based on how they were made and who they were made by. Trade around the villages was a good way to keep good relations with the emperor.
The third thing I learned this week was that cotton made up a majority of China’s trade exports. I mentioned before how trade was common in China but it was also common for china to trade their cotton with other countries. Cotton textiles made up 25% of China’s trade exports.
